FHWA is collaborating with Australia’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Austroads and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology on harmonizing methodologies for pavement design that consider the environment and recycled materials (i.e. Life-cycle assessment, Product Category Rules, Environmental Product Declarations, green procurement in construction projects, etc.), and fostering collaboration in the development of ISO standards.
A synthesis report was produced that will serve as an official record of the exchanges engaged in by the FHWA, NTC and the other participating stakeholders. In addition to determining the FHWA'S and the NTC's common strategic interests (both present and future), it also documents insightful connections and ways to move forward in the cooperation. A Public Roads article summarizing the collaboration was published in Winter 2019 issue.
